I recently read a project description on one of the service marketplace web sites.  The buyer needed web content written by a professional copywriter.  They specifically needed someone with SEO expertise.

The problem with their hiring criteria was that they would only consider writers from India. This was for content in English.  The content was intended for an English speaking and reading audience.

The buyer made it clear that they would only consider the pricing available from Indian companies; in a word—cheap.

I have nothing personally against people in India, but I have a lot of experience reviewing web sites written in English by writers in India and rewriting projects originally authored in India.

Hindi is the first language in India, not English.  The quality of English copy and content written in India is not of high quality.  How could it not be; you are not hiring a native English speaker. Anyone who operates a business web site, aimed at an English-speaking audience, has to hire a writer who speaks English as their native language.  I’m sorry, but it’s just that simple.

Saving money is compromise.  It does not equate to quality.  Quality writing contributes to the public image of a company; it furthers the company’s brand.  Inferior writing achieves the opposite.  It presents an image of the company that the company is not professional, they don’t care about their public image and their way of doing business includes compromise.

Hire quality.  If that means hiring a native English speaker for writing projects aimed at an English speaking audience, then that’s what you HAVE to do.  Spend the extra money and have it done right.  Poor content means lost sales.  It means that prospects leave your web site without buying.  It reduces the effectiveness of your brand.

Web content and marketing copy have to be approached carefully and thoughtfully. There is a lot that good content and copy must achieve and only a professional can construct it properly.
